Wetherby Manor care home praised for poppy display for Remembrance Day

A Wetherby care home has been praised for their touching poppy display to mark Remembrance Day.

Wetherby Manor poppy displayThe residents of Wetherby Manor care home on St James’ Street have produced a wonderful display of poppies and artwork. With the help of the care team, they made painted special heart shaped stones, furniture decorations and a ‘Lest We Forget’ poster complete with red and purple poppies to acknowledge the people and animals who served.

The display has been set up in Wetherby Manor’s lounges and willows annex so that all the residents can enjoy the artwork for themselves. Special decorations and some of the artwork have also been placed in the front windows of the home so that members of the public can enjoy them as well.

Glenys Williams, 82, who has been a resident at Wetherby Manor since 2015, was keen to say how much she had enjoyed making the display.

It was great fun and I’m glad people can enjoy it from outdoors, even if they can’t come in to see it right now. We’ve always done something nice for Remembrance Day and it means a lot to me to make something special to remember those who gave their lives for us.

We especially enjoy taking part in the annual Remembrance Day parade through Wetherby but as this is not taking place this year, we are having our own service here at the care home and celebrating it in our own way.

Wetherby Manor poppy displayJudith Scurr, Manager of Wetherby Manor, said:

Myself and some of my residents and staff have spent the last few months knitting these special poppies for our display this year, I am extremely proud of all my staff and their efforts to make this so special

We always like to do something to remember those who gave their lives and the Poppy display is very important to the residents. This year more than ever it’s been very special for us. We may not be able to take part in the Wetherby remembrance parade this year but we have organised our own service of remembrance and I will lay our wreath in Remembrance of all those loved and lost on behalf of everyone on the memorial.
